About Default Kit

Big life transitions all share the same pattern: you suddenly need ten things at once, you don't know which to buy, and you spend the first month buying the wrong things twice. Default Kit is the antidote, a small site that publishes one well-researched starter kit per transition.

What we do

Each guide is structured the same way: who it's for, the short answer, three tiers (budget, nice, overkill), a checklist, and a list of what not to buy yet. We pick the products. You skip the wrong-thing tax.

Who writes this

Anker Rasmussen, editor. Writes Default Kit's gear guides. Based in Europe; tests on a hybrid week of trains, hot-desks, and a home office. The buying philosophy: pick once, buy once, save the next person from the wrong-thing tax. Reach out at hello@defaultkit.com with corrections, product nominations, or arguments about which laptop stand actually deserves the top pick.

How we make money

Most outbound product links are affiliate. If you buy through them, the price stays the same; we get a small cut. We rank by what we'd actually buy, affiliate rates don't pick the products. If a product is expensive, we'll tell you when the cheaper one is fine. Full disclosure on the disclosure page.

What's next

The current focus is the first office job cluster, eight guides for the gear and decisions of your first salaried role. Next: first apartment, first long commute, first move abroad. The roadmap follows the transitions of life.
